I used to have a chip on my shoulder about being repeatedly turned down in my applications to study art at degree level through the eighties and nineties.
Now that the Royal Academy have announced Tracey Emin to be their new Professor of Drawing I understand that I was clearly applying for the wrong courses (fine art) at the wrong institutions (art colleges).
I'm happy to accept that Tracey Emin is an artist, I do not challenge that. But Professor of Drawing? By what criteria?

She has glasses.......and a pencil.
I guess it must be by the criteria that says your fame and the price you can ask for your work has far more clout than your actual skill level.
I thought you must master something before you could teach it?
This is obviously a case of... "it's not what you know, but who you know" if I have ever seen one.

That simply does not work on any level. Mind you, I teach at a University where the Fine Art course does not do life drawing. Work that out.

I think they missed a few words off, it should probably be "Professor of Drawing More Money In" :)
Dear Mr Denning
I come to this site from the Guardian commentary on the subject of Ms Emin's appointment.
I tell you with authority that your worries are echoed within the association of some of the Academicians.
Your work is very very interesting and certainly displays a strong sense of draughtmanship and I wish you the best in the future.
Please do not worry yourself too greatly at the passing silliness of what is only a small art club !
Talentless yes. The trouble is we are talking about her as though she matters.
Eveyone I have ever slept with 1963 to 1995. This is a tent Guy, I could have done that. Maybe not so many names, but I can put a tent. That's a trait of the hunter gatherer, not art. There are a lot of names in there though?

..of course it’s obvious isn’t it?
-those who can will do it those who can’t will teach it...
